Patrick McCartney is an improviser, teacher, director, and ensemble builder based in the New
York/New Jersey area.
After years performing and studying long form improvisation, Patrick began developing an
approach to teaching rooted in ensemble, presence, emotional honesty, and improvisation as a
theatrical art form — not simply a tool for comedy.
His work emphasizes listening, connection, third thought, and the belief that improvisation can
be transformative for performers and non-performers alike. His classes are designed for adults
seeking rigorous creative work, genuine collaboration, and a deeper relationship to live
performance.
Patrick has taught improvisation for performers, students, professionals, and recovering artists
at various levels of experience. He studied under some of the foundational voices in long form
improvisation and continues to explore how improvisation intersects with theater, wellness,
community, and contemporary culture.
His current work focuses on building ensemble-based training programs and developing a future
theater company dedicated to original work, long form improvisation, and new plays.
Fall 2026 classes launch in New York.
